Dustin J. Pitts represents clients in all facets of tax controversy matters
before the South Carolina Department of Revenue, Internal Revenue Service,
United States Tax Court, and United States District Court. Mr. Pitts’
practice also incorporates business litigation in South Carolina state and
federal courts. Before joining Cooper Tierney, Mr. Pitts was an associate in
a nationally recognized tax controversy and litigation practice where he
represented clients in audits and administrative appeals before the IRS and
in litigation before the U.S. Tax Court. Mr. Pitts began his career as an
Honors Attorney in the IRS Office of Chief Counsel where he represented the
IRS in Tax Court litigation as lead counsel and trial team co-chair. In this
role, Mr. Pitts was recognized as a member of Department of the Treasury
Legal Division’s Team of the Year in 2019. He also advised the IRS on
individual, corporate and partnership tax, civil tax procedure, penalties,
and collection. During law school, Mr. Pitts was the Managing Editor of the
Charleston Law Review, Chief Justice of the Moot Court Board, and a member
of the winning team of the 2015 National Tax Moot Court Competition.
